Stephen has an Honours degree in Chemistry from Oxford University and a PhD in physical organic chemistry from the University of St Andrews.
After completing his formal education, Stephen spent four years in chemical research specialising in peroxide and surfactant chemistry. In 1996 Stephen joined Dr J H Burgoyne & Partners where he worked as an associate investigating primarily fires and explosions. During this time he investigated several hundred incidents involving large industrial sites, commercial premises, domestic premises and a wide range of vehicles. In 2003 Stephen joined Geoffrey Hunt & Partners as an Associate. Since then he has investigated many further incidents of a similar nature. Stephen joined the Halliwell Forensics team in 2023.
Stephen has a vast range of experience, particularly in the investigation of fires, explosions and chemical incidents as well as cases involving carbon monoxide poisoning and has prepared part 35 reports, joint statements and given expert evidence in Court on numerous occasions. Stephen has investigated cases involving large and high profile fires and explosions in commercial premises as well as numerous domestic fires and many fires in vehicles of different types. These have included hot works fires, deliberate fires and many fires caused by electrical equipment, both white goods and domestic mains installations.
